ABOUT

Varun was born in India and moved to Brisbane at an early age where he still resides. Being largely colour blind, his style is characterized by clashing colours and tonal simplicity. Faces and body language are poised to illicit an expression or convey meaning to the viewer. Varun's favorite medium is acrylic on canvas.

The use of colour is a result of his colour-blindeness which led him to question the 'normal' perception. We naturally assume that what we see is somehow correct and associate meaning behind it. In reality, there are other people, animals, maybe even plants that perceive light and colour very differently. What if we could see things clearly, free from the limitations of our human capacity?

Varun's work explores a wide range of themes; religious symbolism, mortality, heroism, human greed and yes, sometimes he will just paint a rapper because he thinks they're f@cking cool.
